Lancing at higher levels is pretty much overkill in terms of damage and therefore mostly wasted. I’ve never been able to come even close to that with any melee build, much less the lance. I’ve done 200+ armies solo with relative ease and speed. High level horse archer characters can solo groups of 100+. Horse archery is also the most powerful build by a longshot if you do dedicate to it. A horse archer won’t really be good for much killing until they hit level 20+.

The character doesn’t come into his own for sometime, when compared to other builds. Horse archery is, without a doubt, a very costly build to implement. You can be much more effective with a lance much earlier, and with less focused of a build. At higher levels, single shots are typically doing 50+ damage and one-hitting anything without a shield. Typically, you counter-clockwise circle a large herd of enemies while galloping at full speed shooting arrows as fast as you can. The only time my horse archer shoots from a parked horse is when the character is just starting out and doesn’t have the skill to shoot on the move. With a powerdraw skill at +4 above my bow (e.g., 9 skill with a 5-req warbow), 250+ proficiency, and a horse archery skill of 4 or so, my reticle is barely bigger than standing stock-still while riding the horse at full speed. Weapon proficiency also helps greatly with the reticle size and the amount of time you can hold. If you pick a bow that is right at your draw skill, it is going to be damn hard to use. The greater your power draw exceeds the bow’s draw requirement (capped at +4) the more accurate the bow is and the longer the reticle will stay “tight”.

One of the things that a lot of people don’t know about the bow is in the selection. I know you can also just park your horse a distance away and fire arrows, but I prefer constant mobility in battle. I find it takes longer to draw the bow, gauge the dropoff, and get a kill shot, especially if moving, than it is to just charge with a lance.
